The fire occurred at 16 Lexington Avenue around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25. When fire crews responded to the call, they noticed upon arrival heavy smoke billowing from both stories of the duplex. Authorities also observed open flames coming from the second-story bedroom window.
The heat from the fire melted the siding on the building next door. Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control within about 10 minutes, but the building sustained serious damage from heat and smoke.
All occupants had exited the house before fire crews arrived. Two adult females, as well as five children, were displaced from the first floor, and three adult males were displaced from the second floor.
The Red Cross responded to provide assistance, and the home remains unfit for occupancy. Fire Inspector Corey Gilchrest and Deputy Fire Marshal Kirk McDonald are investigating the cause of the blaze.
